The problem
The data exists.
Almost nobody reads it

By US law, every hedge fund managing over $100m must publicly disclose its long equity holdings each quarter. The form is called a 13F. It is filed with the SEC. It is free to anyone with an internet connection.

This is one of the most extraordinary information asymmetries in finance — not because the data is hidden, but because nobody reads it properly. The 13F universe contains tens of thousands of filings every quarter. To extract anything useful, you need to know which managers actually outperform, what fraction of their book a position represents, whether they were buying or selling, and whether the position fits any framework you care about. Most retail investors never get past the first step.

The Great Investments Programme's monthly Hedge Fund Manager Picks report exists to close that gap. We do the reading. We apply the filters. We hand the member a document they can act on.

I.
The filter

Four cuts. From thousands of funds, to a handful.

The world has 487+ tracked hedge funds at our scale of analysis. Most are mediocre. Some are catastrophic. Our job is to find the few worth reading — and then read only the positions they have actually committed serious capital to.

CUT 01
Three-year return of 40% pa or higher
Eliminates fund managers who are average, lucky in one year, or coasting on past glories. Sustained excellence is the bar.
~25funds remaining
CUT 02
Assets under management above $1bn
Below $1bn AUM, fund returns can be skewed by single positions and operational fragility. Above it, results are statistically meaningful.
~10funds remaining
CUT 03
Position 5% or more of fund assets
Real conviction shows up as size. A 0.3% position is a placeholder; a 5%+ position means the manager is willing to be wrong publicly. We ignore everything below the threshold.
~30holdings
CUT 04
Cross-checked against GIP technical & fundamental criteria
Each holding is then run through our own framework: VGI score, MACD direction, Snowflake fundamentals, analyst consensus. Members see which qualify as Special Situations and which sit in caution.

II.
The names behind the report

The funds we read are not boutiques.

These are firms with decades of track record, billions under management, and reputations that move markets when they file. The roster rotates each month based on which funds currently meet our four-cut filter — but every issue is anchored by names of this calibre.

III.
What's inside each monthly report

Roughly 30 pages. Eight things per stock.

Every holding that survives the four cuts gets the same treatment: a full-page analysis covering eight specific areas. This is the work most retail investors never see done — and most institutional investors pay £25,000+ a year to access via Bloomberg terminals and broker research.

R.01
Hedge fund conviction context
Which fund holds it, how big the position is, what the fund's overall strategy is, and how this name fits. You see the pattern, not just the ticker.
13F SourceConviction
R.02
12-month investment thesis
Plain-English narrative of what the fund manager is likely seeing — the structural tailwind, the catalyst, the mispricing they've identified. Written so a layperson grasps it in two minutes.
ThesisPlain English
R.03
Bull, base & bear scenarios
Explicit 12-month price scenarios with upside, downside, and most-likely outcomes. The bear case is named, not euphemised. Investors deserve to see what they could lose, not just what they might gain.
Risk Modelling
R.04
Specific risks called out
5–8 named risk factors per stock. Insider selling. MACD deterioration. Tariff exposure. DOJ investigations. Debt coverage gaps. We do not soften the picture to keep you holding.
Read Carefully
R.05
MACD & technical overlay
Every position is read against weekly MACD direction. Special Situations require rising momentum from oversold. Positions in Daddy Bear configuration are flagged "do not add" until momentum confirms recovery. The technical layer keeps fundamental enthusiasm honest.
MACDDiscipline
R.06
Analyst consensus check
Bank ratings from the 13-week window — Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, Citi, Barclays, BofA, Wells Fargo. Where the smart money disagrees with the sell-side, the gap itself is information.
Sell-Side
R.07
Fundamental quality screen
Snowflake-style readout: balance sheet quality, earnings growth, fair-value discount, dividend coverage, insider activity. The numbers are reported even when they contradict the headline narrative.

R.08
GIP status classification
Each name is tagged as Special Situation, Quality Holding, Improving, MACD Bear Territory, or High Caution. This single line tells you whether discipline says yes, wait, or no — without you having to weigh the rest yourself.

What it would take you to do this yourself

What the work looks like, without the report.

A retail investor with a Bloomberg subscription, a working knowledge of MACD, an SEC EDGAR account, and forty hours a month could replicate what we send you. Most never will. Here is what they would have to do.

What it takes to produce the report each month What the GIP member receives
Track all 487+ qualifying global hedge funds; recompute three-year annualised returns; flag funds clearing the 40% pa bar A confirmed list of the best-performing managers in the world this quarter — names, ranks, and track records on page one.
Pull each qualifying fund's latest 13F filing from SEC EDGAR; calculate position weights as percentage of long book; isolate everything above 5% The roughly 30 stocks where billion-dollar managers have placed serious money this quarter.
For each stock: pull Snowflake fundamentals, weekly MACD chart, analyst ratings from the 13-week window, recent insider transaction filings, latest earnings call transcript One page per stock with the relevant data summarised, contextualised, and translated.
Synthesise the macro picture (tariffs, healthcare policy, geopolitical risk, sector rotation) and assess how each holding maps to it A two-page market context essay opening the report — the same macro lens applied across every stock.
Construct bull / base / bear price scenarios for each name with explicit price targets and the trigger conditions for each Three scenarios per stock, named with explicit price levels — already done.
Apply GIP discipline: rising MACD from oversold, VGI score 7+, fund quality threshold met, conviction threshold met One line: Special Situation, Quality, Improving, Bear Territory, or High Caution.
V.
How we read the smart money

Four principles that govern every issue.

Principle 01

Track record is the only ticket of entry.

We do not include funds because their managers are famous, well-marketed, or appear on television. We include only funds that have compounded at 40% per year for three years or more, with at least $1bn under management. The track record is the credential. Nothing else qualifies.

Principle 02

Conviction is measured in size, not language.

A 0.4% position is a placeholder. A 5%+ position is real money where the manager has agreed to be wrong publicly. We disregard everything below the threshold — even from funds we admire. Conviction without size is just opinion.

Principle 03

Smart money is data, not gospel.

Hedge funds are right far more often than retail investors — but they are not always right. Our framework runs every smart-money pick through our own MACD, fundamental, and analyst checks. If the data disagrees, that disagreement is the story, and the report says so.

Principle 04

Monthly cadence, never real-time noise.

We do not send price alerts. We do not text you when a stock moves 2%. The report lands once a month, comprehensive, considered, and written in the spirit of investing rather than trading. This is LFI — Low-Frequency Investing. Real returns compound from patience, not reaction.

The rhythm

One report. One evening's read. Once a month.

Most investing services drown members in noise. Daily emails, real-time alerts, "urgent" trade ideas that never quite mature. The Hedge Fund Manager Picks report is the opposite by design.

Each issue arrives around the 20th of the month — once 13F filings have been processed, analysed, and run through our framework. Members read it once. They check the classifications. They make their own decisions on their own timeline.

The cadence is the point. A portfolio is built over thirty years. The questions that matter — which businesses to own, at what price, with what concentration — are not answered by being faster. They are answered by being more careful, with better information, more often than the average.

This is what monthly looks like. Not slow. Disciplined.

VI.
Boundaries

What this report is not.

Equally important to say, out loud. Six things this report deliberately is not — because adjacent products in the market routinely overclaim each of them.

Not

A list of stock picks

The report is not a "buy these" list. Every name is contextualised, classified, and risk-assessed. Some names are flagged "do not add." The member decides which, if any, fit their own circumstances.

Not

Personal financial advice

Nothing in the report constitutes a personal recommendation under FCA rules. The Great Investments Programme is education and information only. For regulated advice, members should speak with an FCA-authorised adviser.

Not

A copy-trade service

The report is not designed to be mechanically replicated. Hedge funds enter and exit positions on different timeframes, with different hedges, and at different prices than retail investors can achieve. Blind copying is a recipe for poor outcomes.

Not

A real-time alert system

We do not text members when a stock moves. The report lands monthly, by design. Investors who need to know about a 2% intraday move are usually the same investors whose returns suffer from over-trading.

Not

A guarantee of returns

Hedge fund managers underperform. Track records reverse. Macro shocks disrupt every framework. The report's job is to give better-informed decisions, not certainty. Every issue carries explicit risk warnings.
